Real Fashion

Monday, February 19th, 2007

I’ve been in Walker, MN (and the surrounding area) for the past few days working for my boss on a fashion shoot for W Magazine. The whole concept behind the project was to get ordinary people to wear high-fashion clothing, and then photograph them in their environment. This got me thinking, however, about the idea of reality for fashion designers. This was my first time on a fashion shoot, so I was a little surprised at how much tailoring and fitting was done solely for the purpose of the photograph. It was kind of like finding out that my favorite vocal performance was actually compiled from about 100 different takes. I know that there is a level of the un-real in almost everything these days (and I guess I should have expected it in fashion), but I think I was secretly hoping for a moment of unbridaled purity. Is that silly?
