rochester posse

Thanks to everyone who made it down to Rochester for the opening last weekend–I was a bit nervous, but I feel like I pulled everything off without a hitch. I really don’t have many pictures–hopefully tucker will post some. But i did make a short clip of the video, so you can check that out. In the coming month I plan to release a limited edition EP/DVD of the video and it’s accompanying soundtrack – I’m sure I’ll post when it’s ready.

Engine

So, I sold my car today. Not necessarily because I wanted to, but because it died, and I live in the city and don’t have a place to store a 2,000 lb piece of garbage (we actually don’t have a place to put any of our garbage). I put it up on craigslist (I LOVE craigslist) and within 15 minutes I had 15 people offering me my asking price, some offering more. Within an hour I had exchanged the title and keys for money. Beautiful. Actually, the response was so strong that someone located my car using the pictures I had posted on craigslist and put this note on my window.

honda note

Kind of cool, kind of scary. If I hadn’t already have sold the car, they totally would have gotten it. E for effort.

So, I’m a busser and a biker now. My friend Brian mentioned that I should get a motorcycle and I got kind of excited about that. I think I could get into that.

It’s happening. This Saturday beginning at 8pm at the Rochester Art Center my show Sunburn opens–new images, an expanded sunset, and a brand new video will all be present. In addition, I’ll be doing a live performance of the soundtrack –in the art center’s freight elevator–. Get ready to dance.

Diving Bells

Friday, February 8th, 2008

So I finally saw The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the other night. I’m not sure where the official ‘cool-guy-stance’ is on this movie, but I can say I really loved this film. I haven’t seen any of Julian Schnabel’s other films, but I found it to be a perfect blend of art, narrative, and beauty. Not only that, but it had a killer soundtrack to boot.

I have to admit that I was initially attracted to this movie not because of Schnabel or any art-world connections, but rather to the title. Long story short, my friends and I tried to build a diving bell way back in the day, and I’ve always been interested in the subject. Much to my surprise, the book/film has little do with actual diving bells, but instead uses them as metaphor for Bauby’s paralyzing condition. Perhaps this will be enough impetus for me to actually finish the diving bell…

Portrait

Monday, February 4th, 2008

As a photographer who is just getting used to taking people’s portraits, I’ve become super-sensitive to the disconnect between what the photographer thinks is a good portrait of someone vs. what the subject thinks. Having said that, I’ve never liked a picture of myself until I saw this one:
