Hatin’ on Hirst

What’s with everybody ganging up on Damien Hirst’s latest project? For starters, see here, here, here, here, here, and here. If anything, I think this piece makes more sense in Hirst’s catalogue than the butterfly/stained glass images he did last year. I know it’s easy to hate on successful artists, but my biggest fear is the ‘good use of money’ argument that is coming up in the discussion around this piece. That’s a slippery slope–sure, Hirst could have used the 15-20 million dollars spent to create the diamond-encrusted skull on a more humanitarian cause. But then the 20 dollars I spend on film and processing should be criticized for that as well. Art has rarely been an efficient way to make the world a better place, and I don’t think many people expect Art to do that, so why criticize it on that level?

Anyway, sorry for the lack of posts lately, between moving, releasing a new album, and everyday life, blogging falls to the side. Hopefully more posts in the near future. Here’s what I did last weekend–viva la silkscreen!

Mixtapes Covers

Don’t forget to order your copy of my band’s brand new album from my webstore. Or better yet, come to a Tim Rally Gold show this week. Thursday we’re at the New Granada in Minneapolis, and Friday we have our CD release show/Day of Familia party at the Turf Club. CD’s will be only 5 bucks at each show, and I made an uber-limited run of new t-shirts just for the occasion.
